Additional Details

Calvin Chapin (1763-1851) was the longtime minister of the Rocky Hill Congregational Church near Hartford, and an outspoken supporter of the temperance and antislavery causes. The first 84 pages consist of Chapin's essays and notes on a variety of subjects. An 1848 essay on slavery, apparently original, begins on page 44. Pages 85 through 105 are Chapin's diary covering 21 July 1849 through 9 March 1851. He did not sign this volume, but the frequent use of the initials RH, mention of numerous Rocky Hill parishioners, discussion of missionary activities and sermons, and emphasis on Chapin's favored causes makes his authorship seem likely. The diary ends eight days before Chapin's death.
